Karl Jaberg

Karl Jaberg (born April 24, 1877 in Langenthal ; † May 30, 1958 in Bern ) was a Swiss Romance philologist , linguist and dialectologist .

life and work

Jaberg received his doctorate in 1900 in Bern with Emile Freymond on pejorative development of meaning in French (in: Zeitschrift für Romansische Philologie 1901, 1903, 1905). From 1901 to 1907 he was a teacher in Aarau and Zurich. In 1906 he completed his habilitation in Zurich under Jakob Ulrich On the associative phenomena in verbal inflection of a south-east French dialect group. A principal investigation (Aarau 1906). In 1907 he became associate professor in Bern , and in 1909 full professor of Romance philology, Italian language and literature and worked until 1945. Under the influence of Jules Gilliéron (whom he had seen in Paris from 1900 to 1901) and Hugo Schuchardt , he designed the concept together with Jakob Jud den Monumental linguistic and factual atlas of Italy and southern Switzerland : AIS (8 vols., 1928 to 1940) ( an interactive version of which is available on the NavigAIS-web website ), explorers: Paul Scheuermeier , Gerhard Rohlfs , Max Leopold Wagner . From 1942 to 1948 Jaberg was director of the Glossaire des patois de la Suisse romande .

From 1928 to 1930 he was president of the international Société de Linguistique Romane . In 1937 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
