Jacob Jud
Jakob Jud (born January 12, 1882 in Wängi in the canton of Thurgau ; † June 15, 1952 in Seelisberg in the canton of Uri ) was a Swiss Romance philologist .
Life and Scientific Work
After studying at the University of Zurich and at the universities in Paris and Florence , Jud was Professor of Romance Linguistics and Old French Literature at the University of Zurich from 1922 to 1950. In Romance studies, his focus was on the dialectology of Italian , French and Romansh as well as the continuation of onomasiology .
Under the influence of his teacher Heinrich Morf , he combined Jules Gilliéron's linguistic geography with the ideas of the research direction words and things , and the interactions between culture and language formed the center of his research. Together with Karl Jaberg, Jud conceived the monumental language and factual atlas of Italy and Southern Switzerland (AIS), which was published in eight volumes between 1928 and 1940. The explorers were Paul Scheuermeier , Gerhard Rohlfs and Max Leopold Wagner .
Jud countered the irredentism of the Italian fascists , who classified Graubünden Romance as an Italian dialect, with linguistic arguments.
Together with Arnald Steiger, he was the editor of the scientific journal Vox Romanica . Among his students were Rudolf Hotzenköcherle and Fritz Gysling .
