Rudolf Hotzenköcherle (born April 12, 1903 in Chur ; † December 8, 1976 in Zurich ) was a Swiss linguist , professor at the University of Zurich and co-founder and first main editor of the Linguistic Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland (SDS) .

Life

Hotzenköcherle was born in Chur as the son of Rudolf Hotzenköcherle (printer, 1866–1934) and Anna Lisa, b. Kramer (1880–1962) born. After graduating from the cantonal school in Chur , he studied linguistics, first from 1923 to 1925 at the University of Geneva Romance studies with Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye , then at the University of Zurich Romance studies with Louis Gauchat and Jakob Jud and German with Albert Bachmann and Emil Ermatinger . He received his doctorate from Bachmann in 1932 with a dissertation on the dialect of Mutten ( Graubünden ).

In 1935, Hotzenköcherle became an associate professor at the University of Zurich, succeeding the late Wilhelm Wiget . In 1937/38 he completed a research stay at Uppsala University . From 1938 until his retirement in 1969 he was a full professor for Germanic Philology at the University of Zurich. In 1966 he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical and Historical Faculty of the University of Basel .

Hotzenköcherle's main research focus was Swiss-German dialectology . Together with Heinrich Baumgartner (1889–1944), he founded the research project Sprachatlas der Deutschen Schweiz (SDS) in 1935 , directed the dialect recordings carried out for it (1939–58), personally recorded the Walser dialects of Northern Italy with Fritz Gysling and from 1962 onwards Publication until his death. He was editor of the series Contributions to Swiss German Dialect Research (24 volumes; up to volume 22 in connection with the Swiss German dictionary edited by Rudolf Hotzenköcherle, Frauenfeld 1949-75).

Hotzenköcherle was from 1935 to 1974 a member of the executive committee or the board of the Swiss Idiotikons , until 1960 in the function of the actuary and from 1966 in that of the vice-president.

Together with Heinrich Baumgartner, Gottfried Bohnenblust and Walter Henzen , Hotzenköcherle founded the "Academic Society of Swiss Germanists" in 1940 (today the "Swiss Academic Society for German Studies").
