The Bündner Kantonsschule ( Rhaeto-Romanic Scola chantunala grischuna, Italian Scuola cantonale grigione, the main building also known as the Halde Cantonal School ) in Chur is the largest secondary school in the Canton of Graubünden . It is located on Alte Schanfiggerstrasse / Arosastrasse 2 in the immediate vicinity of the Chur Theological University .

history

The Bündner Kantonsschule emerged in 1850 from the two Catholic and Protestant canton schools founded in 1804. The first headmaster of the latter was the reformed clergyman Peter Saluz . The cantonal school, which unites both denominations, moved into a new building in 1850.

In keeping with its name, the Bündner Kantonsschule focuses on the entire canton and is the only one in Switzerland to be trilingual. Almost 1250 pupils (as of 2012) are taught by 150 teachers in the three departments of grammar school , technical secondary school and commercial secondary school .

management

The rector is Gion Lechmann. When electing the Vice-Rector (Philippe Benguerel) and the Vice-Rectors (Cristina Maranta, Giancarlo Sala and Christina Meier), care is always taken to ensure that as many language groups and sub-regions of the canton as possible are represented.

Vineyard stairs

The vineyard stairs on the old Schanfiggerstrasse

After the former teachers' seminar had been transferred to the canton school, pupils and teachers often had to cope with the 200 meters as the crow flies between the building near the Plessur and the Halde schoolhouse 30 meters higher on the narrow and busy St. Luzi-Strasse several times a day . In order to create a safer and shorter route, a competition was announced in 2009, which the two Zurich architects Philipp Esch and Stephan Sintzel won.

They realized a covered, 161-step stairway with an inclined lift for the disabled, which pierces the retaining wall of St. Luzi-Strasse and the rock behind it and opens up to the vineyard and the Alte Schanfiggerstrasse. With this highly acclaimed project, Esch and Sintzel were able to prevail against well-known local competitors such as Bearth & Deplazes , Jüngling & Hagmann and Corinna Menn.

Varia

The archaeologically important St. Stephen's Chapel is located under the playground of the Bündner Kantonsschule .
