Rudolf Trüb (born May 10, 1922 in Ennenda ; † February 28, 2010 in Zollikon ) was a Swiss linguist . He was editor at the Schweizerischer Idiotikon and author and co-editor of the Language Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland (SDS) .

Life and work

Trüb grew up as the son of pastor Rudolf Trüb in the canton of Glarus . He studied German, history and folklore at the universities of Zurich and Basel and graduated in 1945 with a teaching diploma. In 1948 he received his doctorate under Rudolf Hotzenköcherle , after which he attended the University of Marburg in 1949 .

1950–1952 and 1958–1959 Trüb worked as a high school teacher at Zurich secondary schools, and from 1957 to 1987 he was an editor at the Swiss Idiotikon . In addition, he worked for half a century for the language atlas of German-speaking Switzerland . Between 1946 and 1958 he made dialect recordings at 150 locations in the Alpine region, and from 1954 to 1959 he made sound recordings with Rudolf Brunner . In 1958 Trüb prepared the publication together with Hotzenköcherle; he was then involved in the creation of the maps in all eight volumes. After Hotzenköcherle's death, Trüb served as director and co-editor from 1976 to 1997. In 2003, together with his wife Lily Trüb, he completed the work with a final volume, which contains an overview of the work's history and the method of publication as well as a complete index of all eight volumes.

In addition, Trüb worked on the Atlas of Swiss Folklore from 1960–1995 and on the Farmhouse Research Campaign in Switzerland from 1965–1997 and supported the German word atlas from 1961–1980 and the Linguarum Europae atlas with Swiss data from 1978–1986 . Between 1975 and 1990 he held numerous teaching positions at the University of Zurich. From 1962 to 1987 he was President of the Bund Schwyzerdütsch (today the mundartforum ), in which function it was a particular concern of his to keep the publication of Swiss dialect dictionaries at a high level.
