Emil Ermatinger (born May 21, 1873 in Schaffhausen , Switzerland ; † September 17, 1953 in Zurich ) was a Swiss German studies specialist .

Life

Emil Ermatinger was the youngest of five children of Martin Ermatinger and Maria Helena, b. Möckli, born. After receiving his doctorate in 1897, Ermatinger initially worked as a high school teacher in Winterthur . In the same year he published his first volume of poetry. In 1899 he married Barbara Anna Kunz. In 1902 he published his first short stories. From 1909 he was professor of German literature at the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum and from 1912 to 1943 at the University of Zurich . In 1939 he was visiting professor for a semester at Columbia University in New York.
