Life and work

Jakob Baechtold studied German in Heidelberg and Munich from 1867 to 1870 and received his doctorate in 1870 at the University of Tübingen with a thesis on the Lancelet Ulrichs von Zatzikhoven . From 1872 he worked as a high school teacher in Zurich and Solothurn , where he also council , worked. At the same time, he headed the feature section of the NZZ (1879–1884). After his habilitation in 1880, he became professor for German literature at the University of Zurich in 1888 . From 1896 he also had a teaching assignment for Swiss literature at the Federal Polytechnic School .

Baechtold made a particular contribution to Swiss literature. On the one hand, he worked as the biographer and estate administrator of his friend Gottfried Keller . Baechtold's cellar biography was published in 1978 in the version revised by Emil Ermatinger . On the other hand, its 900-page history of German literature in Switzerland still serves as a treasure trove, especially for the so far little-noticed Swiss literature of the 16th century. Baechtold was also active as a publisher.

Jakob Baechtold's estate is in the Zurich Central Library .
