geography

location

Schleitheim is located in the Schleitheimertal between Randen and Wutach, right on the border with Germany . In the district of Oberwiesen there is the only customs on the municipal area. The neighboring Swiss communities of Schleitheim are the well-known vineyard village Hallau , the canton capital Schaffhausen and the smaller communities Beggingen , Siblingen , Gächlingen and Oberhallau . The village of Schleitheim is embedded in the Schleitheimertal , surrounded by the Staufenberg and the Randen , a foothills of the Jura. On the German side, Schleitheim borders on Stühlingen .

climate

Schleitheim lies in the moderate climate zone. The climate is shaped on the one hand by winds from westerly directions, which often bring precipitation, and on the other hand by the bise (east or north-east wind), which is usually associated with high pressure, but causes cooler weather phases in all seasons than would be expected on average. The foehn, which is important in the Alpine valleys and on the edge of the Alps, normally does not show any particular climatic effects on Schleitheim, apart from a clear view that makes the entire mountain range of the Swiss Alps visible.

Schleitheim is located in a dry area, because the annual rainfall averages 995 mm. The driest month is October with 64 mm, the wettest August with 112 mm. The annual average temperature is 8.7 ° C, with January being the coldest month at –0.5 ° C and July being the warmest month at 17.5 ° C.

history

The area of today's Schleitheim was already settled in Roman times. The vicus at that time bore the name Juliomagus - as is known thanks to the Tabula Peutingeriana dating back to the 4th century . The German name is first attested in 995 as Sleitheim . It is composed of Old High German * sleit "gently sloping, inclined" (cf. synonymous Swiss German schleit, schleiter ) and Old High German heim "house, residence" and thus means "settlement on a gentle slope, on the inclined plane".

Schleitheim was part of the historic Randentalschaft as early as the 10th century .

Achieved historic importance Schleitheim including as Abfassungsort the under the leadership of Michael Sattler incurred schleitheim confession from 1527, the oldest creed of the Reformation Baptist .

In 1530 Schleitheim and Beggingen passed from the Landgraviate of Stühlingen to the city of Schaffhausen in exchange for Grafenhausen and Birkendorf .

coat of arms

Blazon

In red black bull head.

In 1569, the Schleitheim coat of arms is a whole, red ox on a white background. A short time later you can find the white bull with yellow horns in red. The ox as heraldic animal comes from Ludwig Ochs, the first chief bailiff (1559–1569) from Schleitheim. Presumably it was interpreted as a municipal coat of arms due to a lack of knowledge about the origin of the coat of arms, as it was to be found on the official documents. On a seal from 1792 the bull's head can be found on a red hatched background for the first time. During the adjustment in 1949, the municipal assembly was proposed to use the two variants, whole ox or just its head, with the latter prevailing. The one from the 16th century was chosen for the tincture.

economy

job

The community lives from trade and agriculture as well as the numerous commuters who work mainly in Schaffhausen and Neuhausen am Rheinfall.

traffic

The municipality bordering Germany (municipality of Stühlingen ) was the end point of the former Schaffhausen – Schleitheim tram . Road connections exist to Oberwiesen - state border or Schaffhausen as well as local connections to Beggingen and Hallau .

In the local public transport Schleitheim is served by the buses of the transport company Schaffhausen vbsh . A predecessor company was the car connection Schaffhausen-Schleitheim (ASS). This in turn followed the company Strassenbahn Schaffhausen – Schleitheim .

A bike path leads through the rare vineyards to Oberwiesen and the border crossing on the Wutach . The path on the edge of the castle from Schleitheim via the Strickhof to the 'Schlaatemer' Randenturm is interesting for mountain bikers .
