The Schaffhausen public transport vbsh are a transport company in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen . They serve the city of Schaffhausen and the neighboring community of Neuhausen am Rheinfall with the 7 city bus routes and the entire area of the canton Schaffhausen with a total of 22 communities with the 7 regional bus routes , including the two communities Büsingen am Hochrhein and Randegg in Germany. All lines are integrated into the Ostwind tariff association .

Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh was created in 2019 through the merger of Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen (VBSH) (City of Schaffhausen) and Regionalen Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen (RVSH) (Canton Schaffhausen). Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh is a member of the Association of Public Transport VöV and the Union des transports publics UITP .

legal form

Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh is an independent, public-law institution of the city of Schaffhausen. The Grand City Council exercises overall supervision and issues the organizational ordinance. The city council determines the owner's strategy, approves the annual report and financial statements and elects the administrative commission. The independent public-law institution is a technically and organizationally independent administrative unit that is outsourced from the administration and is responsible for performing a public task.

history

For two decades, the city of Schaffhausen and the canton of Schaffhausen pursued the strategy of merging the urban and regional bus companies. In the referendum on June 10, 2018, 66% of the urban and 72% of the cantonal population said yes to the merger of the VBSH and RVSH. Since two voting complaints were submitted to the Federal Supreme Court against the vote, the merger could only be completed in April 2019 with retroactive effect to January 1, 2019.

The Schaffhausen SchSt tram operated between 1901 and 1966 as an electric meter -gauge railway to develop the city of Schaffhausen, its industrial operations in Mühlental and Ebnat and as a connection with the neighboring community of Neuhausen am Rheinfall. The tram was replaced by trolleybuses in 1966. From 1928 city buses supplemented the tram operation on behalf of the SchSt. In 1954 this resulted in a collective bargaining association, which in 1966, after the changeover from trams to trolleybuses, was renamed Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen VBSch. In 1990 the abbreviation was changed from VBSch to VBSH.

The Schaffhausen-Schleitheim tram (St.SS) connected Schaffhausen and Neuhausen with the Oberwiesen district of Schleitheim from 1905 as an electric overland railway . In 1964, the trains on the overland route were replaced by buses. After the changeover, the company was henceforth called the Schaffhausen – Schleitheim ASS car connection . At the same time, the Schleitheim - Beggingen post bus line was taken over. In 1968 the community of Gächlingen was connected to the ASS network. In 2000, the voters of the canton decided to convert ASS into a stock corporation under the name of Regionale Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen RVSH AG . In July 2003 RVSH AG signed a cooperation agreement with PostBus Switzerland . With the integration of the four previous post bus lines (lines 22 to 25) in the canton, a network of five intercity bus lines was created under uniform management. From 2004 RVSH AG operated under the brand name “SchaffhausenBus”. With the introduction of the S-Bahn Schaffhausen im Klettgau, the RVSH network grew to seven bus routes.

future

The city of Schaffhausen wants to be one of the first cities in Europe to switch public bus transport entirely to electric buses .

Conversion to electric buses

Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh intend to convert the 7 trolleybuses to IMC technology. IMC stands for “ In-Motion-Charging ” and means that the trolleybuses are upgraded with a traction battery, which can be charged on the existing overhead lines while driving. The technology enables the dismantling of the contact lines on individual sections of the route. This between the Schaffhausen Fire Brigade Center and Mühletor stops (at the Schaffhausen power plant ) and in Neuhausen am Rheinfall between the Scheidegg and Neuhausen Zentrum stops.

In 2019, the electorate of the city of Schaffhausen approved the gradual conversion of the city bus fleet of Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh from diesel buses to electric buses with a fast charging system within 10 years. This new generation of electric buses is equipped with a battery that is recharged at every stop at Schaffhausen train station while passengers get on and off. Fast charging takes place within a few minutes using a charging arm. Following a public tender, the Spanish company Irizar was awarded the contract to supply the electric bus system. Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen would like to purchase two versions of the “ie Tram” from Irizar: an 18-meter-long articulated bus for 130 people and a 12-meter-long solo bus for 70 passengers. All buses have USB ports on the seats and WiFi. Around 58 million francs are to be invested in converting the entire city bus fleet. By 2023, 15 buses and the complete charging infrastructure in the depot and at Schaffhausen train station are to be procured in a first stage. The investments required for this amount to a net CHF 23.6 million.

The city of Schaffhausen is topographically and the route network predestined for the use of battery buses. All bus lines (except line 9) stop at Schaffhausen train station and can be charged quickly there. The station is also in the valley, which makes recuperation possible on the way down. There is enough space to accommodate the charging infrastructure in the main post office at the train station. All threads come together at the city: It is the owner of the public transport company, purchaser in local traffic, has its own power plant via SH Power and is responsible for the planned redesign of the station square.

Self-driving bus, line 12

In 2018, as a test operation of the Swiss Transit Lab, line 12 in the center of Neuhausen am Rheinfall was put into operation with an autonomous bus. The line was integrated into the control system of the Schaffhausen transport company, which was considered a world first. In 2019 the line was extended to Schlössli Wörth on the Rhine Falls basin. Due to technical problems with hardware and software, operations had to be temporarily interrupted in autumn 2019.
