Irizar is a Spanish commercial vehicle manufacturer based in Ormaiztegi, Basque .

history

The company was founded in Ormaiztegi in 1889 by Jose Antonio Irizar as a supplier and initially manufactured superstructures for animal-drawn wagons. Since 1927, Irizar has specialized in the manufacture of buses on the chassis of other commercial vehicle manufacturers. In 1963 Irizar was converted into a cooperative . As a result of a poor corporate strategy in the 1980s, Irizar was on the verge of bankruptcy in the early 1990s .

Koldo Saratxaga saved the company and made a significant contribution to the fact that the number of employees more than ninefold within 25 years. From 2001 to 2014 Irizar was involved in the Irizar TVS Limited joint venture together with TV Sundram Iyengar & Sons Limited (part of the TVS Group ) and Ashok Leyland . In 2004 a turnover of 310 million euros could be recorded, in 2005 1,600 buses were produced. In 2014 the annual production was given as up to 6000 units, for the year 2016 about 2800 buses were sold, in the same year the turnover was about 600 million USD. Today the company also manufactures battery buses.
