Ashok Leyland is a listed Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer.
history
The company was founded in 1948 in Madras, India as Ashok Motors to assemble vehicles for the British company Austin . In 1955 the name was changed to Ashok Leyland after the participation of Leyland . Commercial vehicle construction began in the same year .
Takeover by Hinduja and Iveco
In 1987 Ashok Leyland was taken over by the Indian company Hinduja and Iveco . Afterwards, Iveco truck models were also included in the model range, for example Ford Cargo , which was taken over by Iveco, as Ashok Leyland Ecomet. Ashok Leyland was the first Indian automobile manufacturer to be ISO 9002 certified in 1993 . In July 2006 Hinduja took over all Iveco's shares in the holding company.
Nissan Ashok Leyland
In 2007 Ashok Leyland entered into a joint venture with Nissan with a joint production facility in Chennai. The joint venture consists of three companies:
- Ashok Leyland-Nissan Pvt. Ltd .: Chennai manufacturing facility owned by 51% Ashok Leyland and 49% Nissan
- Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain Pvt. Ltd .: Engine and transmission manufacturing facility, 51% Nissan and 49% Ashok Leyland
- Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies Pvt. Ltd .: Development center owned 50:50 by both partners.
Dr. V. Sumantran, Executive Vice Chairman of Hinduja Automotive Limited and Director of Ashok Leyland, is the chairman of the powertrain company and on the board of directors of the other two companies. At the time, the joint venture was the largest financial investment in Indian automotive engineering. The first joint product was the Ashok Leyland Dost .
