The Ashok Leyland Dost is a since 2012 in India produced pickup truck , which is also supplied with different superstructures. The Dost is the first result of the 2008 joint venture between Ashok Leyland and Nissan . The Dost is produced in the joint plant near Chennai . The original plans to also produce a minibus version have been dropped. Instead, the Ashok Leyland Stile minivan was added to the range in July 2013 .

Model range

In 2007 Ashok Leyland and Nissan decided to set up a joint venture to manufacture small vans , and later also trucks and buses . For Nissan, this creates a further sales market or further marketing opportunity for its commercial vehicles .

So the Dost is not a fundamentally new product. The body of the Dost corresponds to the Nissan Vanette Largo GC22, which was offered in Japan until 1994. In Europe , this model was only marketed in the minivan and station wagon versions as the Nissan Vanette C22, the pickup version was only available in Asia . In Malaysia , however, the model was produced until 2010 and the production facilities were then exported to India. Ashok Leyland speaks of a Euro-look driver's cab in its own advertising .

The Dost received a new front and a redesigned interior including the dashboard. The new front was designed for better crash behavior. As with the Vanette, the Dost's diesel engine is installed as a mid-engine between the seats. The TDCR engine is a 1478 cm³ three-cylinder engine with common rail injection , an output of 58 hp (43 kW) and a maximum torque of 158 Nm, specially developed for the model and the special Indian requirements . The power is transmitted to the rear axle via a synchronized five-speed manual transmission. The maximum climbing ability of the Dost is 29% and the maximum speed 90 km / h.

During the development, attention was also paid to a small turning circle, which is only 9.6 meters. The serial installation of the so-called LSPV technology is also remarkable, which uses valves to measure the weight of the body and the load and electronically sets the correct braking force to ensure stable braking performance, regardless of whether the vehicle is fully loaded or empty. Even in Europe, if at all, this system is usually only available as an optional extra or in the larger models. The Dost is currently approved for a maximum total weight of 2500 kg, with a payload of 1250 kg and two front seats. Variants with 3500-5000 kg and higher engine power are to follow soon.

Three equipment versions are offered. A power steering is standard from the middle variant LS, air conditioning , fabric seats and bumper painted in body color in the highest variant called LX. The standard version LE is only available in white, whereas the LX is not available in a white body color. For the LS and LX, beige, green and blue paintwork is also available. All of this serves for the most cost-effective production possible and low vehicle prices. The standard installation of a 12 V mobile phone charging station is incomprehensible for European standards, but only a seat belt for the driver in all versions, while the front passenger and a possible third passenger, who can only sit on a cushion without a backrest, have to do without this safety technology . The driver can use the front passenger seat and the middle seat cushion as a couch.

Ashok Leyland is also promoting the Dost as a modern load carrier that offers Japanese quality at Indian costs. In the state of Goa, for example, the Dost costs 4,34,065 Indian rupees with a customary guarantee of 1 year or 50,000 km including four free maintenance work up to 50,000 km.
