The Association of Public Transport (VöV) is a Swiss association in the legal form of a cooperative and is based in Bern .

As an industry association for transport companies, it represents the diverse concerns and interests of transport companies ( rail , trolleybus , bus and ship ) in public transport towards authorities , politics , administration , industry and third parties. The VöV is committed to all matters relating to public transport in Switzerland, informs the public about the importance, concerns and challenges of public transport in Switzerland and is involved in voting campaigns on topics relevant to public transport. In addition, the VöV is the provider of training and further education and provides the pace for industry solutions (for example, regulations for railway technology / RTE, implementation of the Disability Equality Act in public transport ). It operates in close cooperation with ch-direct , the national tariff organization for public transport.

history

The association was founded in 1889 as the Association of Swiss Secondary Railways and renamed the Association of Swiss Transport Companies in 1924 and the Association of Swiss Transport Companies in 1955 , abbreviated to VST in both cases . It was given its current name in 1988. In 1944, the then VST was also the initiator of the Swiss Standard Car , a nationally built standard tram type. The VST standard trolleybus, designed in 1971, was also based on VST plans , 119 copies of which were jointly procured by six cities. Its forerunner, the APG trolleybus developed in the 1960s, was also developed in close cooperation with the VST.

The association today

130 public transport companies are affiliated with the association - from SBB with a good 33,000 employees to the Braunwaldbahn with 24 employees. Its members from the rail, bus, tram and cable car sectors transport over 1.5 million travelers per day, which corresponds to almost 20 percent of the population.

The VöV has two main target groups: On the one hand there are its own members, on the other hand politics and authorities. The association ensures that the exchange of information between these two groups is literally two-pronged: the association collects and coordinates the concerns and interests of its members. This happens, for example, in numerous VöV commissions with special areas and on the board. The VöV represents positions developed in the association vis-à-vis parliament, the federal offices or the cantons. Depending on the public's interest, he can also do this with a media release or at a media conference. On the other hand, the association also receives impulses from outside. Be it from politics, from the authorities, from technology (e.g. digitization) or from customers.

The director is Ueli Stückelberger.

Cooperation with ch-direct

From 2005 to mid-2016, the VöV was also responsible for the management of the national direct transport tariff association , which had previously been run by the Swiss Federal Railways. Direct Transport Switzerland was founded in 1857 and is the oldest tariff association in Switzerland and has been offering general travelcards since 1898 . Today a total of 247 transport companies - and thus practically all Swiss transport companies - are connected to direct traffic. Since July 1, 2016, direct traffic in Switzerland has been coordinated by ch-direct . The association emerged as an independent organization after breaking away from the VöV. However, the two industry associations continue to work closely together. While the Association of Public Transport is primarily involved on the political level, ch-direct primarily acts on the operational and strategic level.

media

The VöV (together with the SBB) publishes the popular magazine VIA , which appears ten times a year .
