The railway was built for tourism and financed entirely privately. The Rüti-Braunwald cable car had been in place for the transport of goods to Braunwald since 1902.

The construction of the railway was initiated by Albert Bebié who, together with his brother-in-law Friedrich Hefti , was able to win Josef Durrer as an engineer. He was responsible for drawing up the plans for the railway and also directed the construction work. The railway construction was carried out by the construction company Hünerwadel & Toneatti. The cost estimate of 480,000 Swiss francs was met.

The railway opened on August 6, 1907, two months late, and initially only ran in summer. Year-round operation was not introduced until 1928. In that year the owner changed, because the Braunwald tourist office was able to secure the majority of the shares.

In 1932 the drive was replaced, which allowed the travel speed to be increased from 1.2 m / s to 2.6 m / s. This reduced the travel time from 20 to 10 minutes. The two old open wooden wagons were replaced in 1939 by light metal wagons with a capacity of 60 people.

The mountain station was demolished in 1964 and replaced by a new building, which was occupied in 1966. At the same time the drive system and the pull rope were replaced (installation of the pull rope November 1965). This modification made it possible to increase the travel speed to 3.3 m / s.

The existing silver-colored cars were replaced on November 13, 1967 by new cars with a capacity of 100 people. These were manufactured in aluminum by Gangloff in Bern and painted red. With the new car, a maximum speed of 3.5 m / s was approved. In normal operation, the vehicle continued to travel at 2.6 m / s. The published travel time remained at 10 minutes.

In 1981 the valley station was relocated directly to the SBB railway line, with the Linthal Braunwaldbahn stop being created at the same time. This was opened with the timetable change on May 23, 1982.
