Oberhallau has a little over 400 inhabitants. The population development shows that there were around 400 inhabitants as early as 1771. The peak was reached in 1840 with 800 inhabitants. Of the 400 Oberhallau residents, 330 belong to the Reformed parish.

coat of arms

Blazon

Lily covered in blue and white by a yellow key horizontally.

Since Oberhallau used to form a community with Hallau , the lily is on their coat of arms. After the separation, however, Oberhallau wanted to wear a special coat of arms. Since their church is dedicated to St. Peter, they chose the key as an additional symbol for their coat of arms. This can be found for the first time in 1558 on a cracked pane. Here, however, the key is still to the right ( heraldic : left) of the lily . The shield with the coat of arms is split from white with a blue key and blue with a yellow lily. In 1751 the version with the lily occupied by a horizontal key is found for the first time. This coat of arms was finally adopted by the municipal council in 1949.

Hill climb

Once a year, preferably on the last weekend in August, the 3.0 km route from Oberhallau to Vord. Berghöf on the Oberhallauerberg hosted the automobile hill climb . The difference in altitude is 157 m with an average gradient of 5.2%. The first race was held in 1923, mostly with motorcycles. At that time, average speeds of over 80 km / h were achieved. The 2007 hill climb was organized for the first time by the specially founded association Pro Bergrennen Oberhallau (VBO for short). The purpose of the VBO is to be able to hold this unique event in the future. The church service is unique in the mountain racing circus and is broadcast along the entire race track during a special engine rest on Sunday morning.

The track record for touring cars set in the race is 1: 16.44, achieved in 2009 by Reto Meisel. The absolute track record up to August 28, 2011 was achieved by Eric Berguerand in a Formula 3000 Lola T96-Cosworth with 1: 12.26 in 2005. The last value corresponds to an average speed of approximately 150 km / h.

On August 28, 2011 the record was broken. Marcel Steiner undercut the time in his Osella Zytek FA 30 sports car by over 2.5 seconds. The sprint from start to finish in the 3rd race took 1: 09.55.

Attractions

"Gmandhuus" Oberhallau

The new street numbering may start from the square with the village shop, but the visual center and landmark of the village is undoubtedly the (Evangelical Reformed) church. It was built in 1751 in place of the then St. Peter's Chapel and renovated for the last time in 1998. This renovation gave a lot to talk about: the vine women protested when it became apparent that the hands are no longer visible from a distance because the wall-gray dial was embellished with a lapis blue in the tone of the Oberhallau coat of arms. The architect was convinced by the vine women and agreed to the gilding of the hands - so the church stayed in the village as far as the timekeeping was concerned.

Inside the church, the eye immediately falls on the organ. It is not installed on the gallery, but in the middle of the choir wall. When a pneumatic organ was to be installed in 1922, the young men did not want to forego their seats on the gallery - otherwise they would have had to sit in the nave - which is why the organ front was installed in the choir. The late Renaissance oak pulpit was quickly built into the middle of the organ pipes.

Next to the church is the restaurant “Gmaandhuus”, which was renovated in 2002, but has been closed for several years.

Interesting
