Hallau (officially Unterhallau until 1934 ) is a political municipality in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen . The viticulture community is located in Klettgau north of the Rhine on the border between Germany and Switzerland . The hamlet of Wunderklingen on the other side of the Hallauerberg also belongs to the community .
history
Hallau is first mentioned in a document in 1064. Hall- probably goes back to Old High German hal "salt source", -au to Old High German ouwa "Land am Wasser".
In 1457 the community acquired the place Wunderklingen from Junker Heinrich von Erzingen , in which Hallau from then on exercised lower jurisdiction . In 1491 the mountain church St. Moritz was built. The village church of St. Moritz , also incorrectly called St. Ulrich, had existed for much longer, as archaeological research in 1954 showed. In 1526 Oberhallau separated from Hallau (Unterhallau) and formed its own community. In 1547 the 16 flags were mentioned for the first time, in which all able-bodied Hallau residents were divided to defend the village. Today the 16 flags live on in the Hallau table cooperatives. 1564, 1611 and 1629 raged in Hallau the plague . In 1629 the first Hallau church book was created. In 1713, Oberhallau also separated from the Hallau community. In 1831 the people of Hallau moved armed to the city of Schaffhausen to get their will with the new constitution. The local museum was founded in 1853 by Johann Georg Pfund . In 1895, the Hallau water and electricity works (WEH) were built in Wunderklingen .
coat of arms
Nothing certain is known about the origin of the Hallau coat of arms. The coat of arms probably originates from that of the bailiff Heinrich Lützel Huser, who in 1370-1373 Neunkirch was Vogt, and thus ruled Hallau. At that time, the Bishop of Constance was involved in disputes with the city, in which Neunkirch can be shown to have helped him financially. Probably the people of Hallau also provided help and received the right to use a coat of arms as a thank you. As such, they took over that of their governor.
The first Hallau seal is from 1542 and shows the same coat of arms. Since Hallau had only carried this coat of arms over the centuries, it was a matter of course that it was confirmed as the official municipal coat of arms in 1949.
economy
Hallau is one of the most famous wine-growing regions in Switzerland and is part of the Schaffhausen Blauburgunderland . The Rimuss winery , known for its non-alcoholic sparkling wines, has its production facility in Hallau.
school
From 1508 the chaplain’s house was also a school building and was in use until 1851; it was called The Learning and was demolished in 1926. The saying was painted on the outside:
Learning is better than house and yard,
because when house and yard is gone,
learning is still there.
The school regulations of Pastor Theodosius Indicohver have been preserved since 1643.
