The village church of St. Moritz is in the center of the municipality of Hallau in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen .

history

Almost nothing is known about the beginnings of the church. Its earliest mention is from 1424; the tower was dendrodated to around 1320 . It is believed that a chapel was added to the tower later. The church is surrounded by a curtain wall with originally four defense towers. The north-western one, in which the first Hallau “learning” school was housed between 1508 and 1594, was abandoned in 1926. Parts of the southwest tower are still in the wall of the house that stands there today. This fortress was the retreat of the Hallau residents, for example in 1499 during the Swabian War .

church

During the renovation in 1956, observations were made inside that indicate a chapel of the same length but less wide. In 1589 the southern wall was moved a little to the south and a new door was installed in the choir. In 1753 the church was almost completely demolished and widened to the north. The church was last renovated in 1956 and the outer facade in 1992. The local museum is located in the churchyard .
