The battle of Hallau for the village of Hallau in the canton of Schaffhausen was fought on April 4, 1499 during the Swabian War between troops of the Swabian Federation and the Swiss Confederation . The outnumbered Confederates and Hallau citizens were ultimately able to drive out the Swabian mercenaries.

Under the orders of Count Wolfgang von Fürstenberg , a Swabian army of around 6000 men moved from Tiengen into the valley on April 1, 1499 . Other troops came from Stühlingen under Count Sigismund von Lupfen , so that a total of around 8,000 men marched against Hallau. At seven in the morning Oberhallau was on fire. The Hallau flags , reinforced by a federal garrison of only 50 men, a total of no more than 400 armed men, withdrew to the St. Moritz churchyard in the village, which was then flanked by four defensive towers . The Swabian troops then plundered the village. Around five o'clock in the evening Hallau's defenders made a sortie and forced the Swabian attackers to retreat.
