Bargen is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen .
geography
Bargen is the northernmost municipality in Switzerland. It consists of the village of Bargen (originally Niederbargen ) and the hamlet of Oberbargen .
Bargen is located on the Durach in the upper Merishausertal at 605 m above sea level. M., where the valley branches further into Hoftal and Mülital. The two valleys are separated by the Nieder Hengst (746 m above sea level) and the adjoining Hoh Hengst , at 861 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality and border point to Germany.
The Mülital, located to the south, is uninhabited and is bordered to the south by the Bargemer Randen (808.7 m above sea level), over whose ridge the municipal boundary to Merishausen runs. In the more northerly Hoftal lies the farm Oberbargen (694.6 m above sea level), once a settlement equivalent to Niederbargen.
In the southeast of the municipality in the Merishausertal, on the border with Merishausen and Wiechs am Randen (municipality of Tengen, Germany), the so-called hose (570 m above sea level) is located, a valley floor between Bargemer Randen and Ebnet (734 m above sea level). ) and Bohl (786 m above sea level). The confused border lines in the hose were cleared up in two attempts, the last one in 1967 when the A4 motorway was being built .
Neighboring communities of Bargen are Merishausen in the south, Blumberg ( Schwarzwald-Baar district ) in the west and in the north and Tengen ( district of Konstanz ) in the east.

history
Bargen is the first time 884 as Paragen mentioned when the Hegau Graf Peringer his Merishausener possession against the Bargener goods of the monastery of St. Gall exchanged. Bargen used to consist of the three hamlets of Unter-, Mittel- and Oberbargen.
Bargen belonged to the Landgraviate of Nellenburg and after the foundation of the Allerheiligen Monastery in 1049 to its immunity district, which came to the city of Schaffhausen in 1451 and 1491 respectively. The most important landowners in Bargen were the Reds of Randenburg. In 1378 Egbert the Red sold his property in Bargen, including the church and bailiwick, to the Spital zum Heiligen Geist Schaffhausen , which expanded its position until 1510. The bailiwick rights were exercised by Schaffhausen from the Reformation until 1798 (Obervogtei Merishausen).
coat of arms
- In yellow and black plumb bob, topped with a hat of freedom with a green, red and yellow feather each.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Bargen appears first on a municipal seal from 1805. The depiction of the freedom hat over a plumb line is a typical symbol of sovereignty from the Helvetic era . Since the village had no coat of arms before the Helvetic era, it kept it afterwards. In 1950 the coat of arms, which is valid today, was officially recognized at the municipal assembly.

Bargen is connected to Schaffhausen via Hauptstrasse 4 . In a northerly direction the road reaches the town of Neuhaus am Randen ( Blumberg municipality ) in Germany . Public transport uses a side street, on which there is an hourly bus service to Schaffhausen on weekdays. Some courses per day also run to Germany. A not entirely insignificant factor of the economy in Bargen are the three petrol stations on Hauptstrasse 4, which, due to their proximity to the border, provide convenient opportunities for tank tourism.
