Hofen is a former municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland . Due to a referendum, Hofen has been part of Thayngen since January 1, 2009 . The Biber river flows through the village and flows into the Upper Rhine below Stein am Rhein .
The border between Germany and Switzerland runs north of the municipality .
history
Hofen was mentioned for the first time in 1258. The main landowner was the St. Georgen monastery in Stein am Rhein . In the 15th century these goods passed to the Lords of Stoffeln . In 1538 Hofen came to the city of Schaffhausen . In 1684 Tobias Holländer became the new master of Hofen. After his death, the owners changed in quick succession. Towards the end of the 18th century, the farms were bought by beavers . In 1860 Hofens separated and became independent.
coat of arms
Blazon: in a red and yellow soaring lion with a white lily in the right front paw.
Since Hofen originally formed a political community with beavers , they also had a common seal, which can be proven to represent an upright plowshare in 1814. When Hofen made efforts to part with beavers in 1845, it adopted a new seal with a lily as a figure. Until the effective separation from beavers in 1860, Hofen used this seal to seal the documents that concerned it alone. In order to avoid duplication with Hallau during the adjustment in 1949, they had to create a new coat of arms. For this they took the coat of arms of Tobias Holländer, the soaring red lion in yellow with inverted colors and combined it with the white lily.
