The beaver flows into the Rhine

The beaver flows into the Rhine

The Biber is a small river in the border area between Germany and Switzerland .

The source is near Watterdingen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg . After about 31 kilometers of the river through the Beaver Valley , the Biber flows into the Rhine west of Hemishofen at the Bibermühle in the canton of Schaffhausen . On the Upper Rhine between Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen is the beaver is the largest tributary.

River course

On its way to the Rhine, the beaver crosses the Swiss-German border five times . The beaver spring is located in the village of Watterdingen in Hegau, Germany . Then the beaver flows through the old town of Blumenfeld . There she falls over the Blumenfelder waterfall. After Beuren , the beaver unites with the Riedgraben. After Büßlingen it crosses the border to Switzerland. There follow the places Hofen and Bibern . After Bibern, the Biber runs for several kilometers along the German-Swiss border, first on the German, then on the Swiss side, before the river flows through Thayngen , the main town of the Reiat . Shortly after Thayngen, the Biber first leaves Switzerland again and flows through Bietingen and Randegg . Before crossing the border again, the Riederbach flows from Gottmadingen into the Biber. The last kilometers the beaver flows through the upper part of the canton of Schaffhausen . The municipality of Ramsen follows after Buch . When Bibermuhle the beaver opens on Ramsemer municipality in the Rhine.

Beaver correction

In the flat, agricultural area between Buch and the estuary, the beaver repeatedly overflowed its banks and flooded the entire valley floor. This is why the canton of Schaffhausen, with the support of the federal government, carried out major river corrections on the Biber in stages from 1902 to 1907. Many of the countless bends in the river have been straightened. The old river loops were filled in with the excavated material from the new course of the river. A new river bed was also built around the village of Buch. The costs amounted to around CHF 500,000.

bad luck

At the end of June 1962, the lower reaches of the beaver was so heavily polluted by a leaky oil tank at a company in Thayngen that almost the entire fish population perished. The drinking water for the communities of Bietingen, Duchtlingen, Eringen, Hilzingen and Riedheim, which was partly taken from the beaver's groundwater area, was not at risk.

Beaver at the beaver

More than 150 years ago, the beaver was also wiped out in the basin of the beaver river. Around the turn of the millennium, the animals repopulated the beavers. First of all, beavers seized the estuary and the lower reaches. This was followed by the river sections around Randegg / Bietingen. In 2005 fresh beaver traces were found again at farms and the community of beavers. It is thanks to the settlement in Switzerland that the animals migrated upstream from the Thur over the Upper Rhine to the middle reaches of the beavers.
