Bibermühle (Ramsen)
The Bibermühle (or Bibernhofgut) is a castle-like estate built during the Renaissance at the mouth of the Biber in the Rhine . The beaver mill is also a hamlet in the municipality of Ramsen in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland.
history
The main building, built in 1528, was sold as a country estate together with the probably older mill operation in 1538 by the Lords of Klingenberg to the town of Stein am Rhein . In 1875 it was sold to private owners from the municipal property and is now owned by two families.
building
The late Gothic main house bears the year 1529 above the main portal. The longitudinal axis of the building is parallel to the Rhine. The ground floor and the first floor are made of masonry, with strong, partly hunched sandstone blocks in the corners. The second floor consists mostly of timber framing . Here, in an intermediate field, there are two coats of arms from Stein with an imperial eagle above. This painting is attributed to the 16th century. The western side has a stepped gable , the eastern side of the gable roof is slightly hipped.
To the north of the main house is one of two stable and barn buildings, which must have been built in 1677. The inscription on a sandstone tablet allows this conclusion. The eastern stepped gable was not rebuilt after the fire of 1920.
The mill building stands west of the main house and has a gable roof with stepped gables on both sides.
A mansard house was added to the south of the mill in the second half of the 18th century.
During the construction of the Sulzer Villa, located directly on the Rhine, in 1918, the mansard house was left standing, but the newly built parts of the villa were stylistically and formally adapted to this, including the roof shape. The Bibermühle antiquarian bookshop, founded by Heribert Tenschert, has existed here since 1993 .
Parts of the ensemble are under monument protection.
