Sonnenburggut

The Sonnenburggut (also called Sonnenburg for short ) is a castle-like country estate in the area of the city of Schaffhausen , Switzerland, which was expanded in the 16th century . The estate and the associated park are privately owned and not open to the public.

The estate was first mentioned in a document in 1589. At that time, the formerly modest building was expanded into a respectable country residence in the Renaissance style at the instigation of the owner and mayor of Schaffhausen, Johann Conrad Meyer . In 1676 the baroque interiors , which are still called showpieces, were created with stucco work by Samuel Höscheller and the tiled stoves by David Pfau.

The estate was owned alternately by several important Schaffhausen patrician families , including the Peyer (in the courtyard), Stokar and Peyer (with the Wecken) families . In 1869 the estate passed into the possession of the industrialist Johann Conrad Neher through marriage , whose son ran his first landscape gardening and tree nursery on the site from 1870 to 1885 .
