The Stokar family (originally Stocker , also: Stokar von Neuforn , Stockar and von Stockar-Scherer-Castell ) is a councilor and court gentleman ( patrician family ) of the Free States of Schaffhausen and Zurich .

history

The Stokar (Stocker) family originally lived in Barzheim and in the (later) Baden area, where they owned fiefdoms from the barons of Hohenklingen , the lords of Rosenegg and the lords of Randegg . The Stokar did not have a knight title and did not own a castle on their feudal estates, but seem to have belonged to the knightly feudal association.

In 1386 the brothers Johann and Heinrich Stocker von Schaffhausen are said to have died accompanied by a Herr von Hohenklingen in the battle of Sempach . The sure progenitor of the Stokar in Schaffhausen is Walter Stockar from Bartzen, mentioned in a document in 1413 and 1427, who bought the Stokarhof in the city of Schaffhausen from Junker Hans Keller von Schleitheim in 1442 and is named as a citizen in the tax register in 1443. His son Heinrich I bought the neighboring house to the black bear in 1478.

In the 16th century the family divided into four main lines (I. main line: Zürcher-Linie, II. Main line: Schaffhausen, III. Main line: Solothurn, IV. Main line: Schaffhausen). Their descendants were made up of numerous politicians, lawyers and members of the military, mainly in Schaffhausen and Zurich.

Benedikt I. Stokar von Neuforn (1516–1579), French councilor, was raised to the French nobility in 1559 by King Francis II of France .

Walther Stockar (1878–1938), a member of the Zurich line of the Stockars, inherited the Castell Castle near Tägerwilen along with its belonging in 1901 from his unmarried uncle Maximilian (Max) von Scherer-Scherburg (1848–1901), the last member of the von Scherer family Inventory and property. One of the conditions associated with the estate required the heir to add the name “von Scherer” to his own family name. Since then, the members of this branch of the Stockar family have all been called von Stockar-Scherer-Castell . At the beginning of the 21st century, Castell Castle is owned by the fourth generation of the von Stockar-Scherer-Castell family.
