Benedict Stokar

Benedikt Stokar (born April 1516 in Schaffhausen ; † February 1, 1579 ibid) was a French councilor of Swiss origin.

Life

Stokar was the second son of the imperial captain Alexander Stokar and founder of the main line Stokar von Neuforn of the Swiss councilor and court lords Stokar . In 1538 he lived in the Stokarberg and in 1545 in the Haus zum Turm in Schaffhausen . In 1544 he and his brother Hans Kaspar Stokar bought two farmsteads in front of the Barfüssergarten and built the "upper and lower courtyard" on them. In 1554 he acquired the sovereignty of the Upper and Lower Neuforn , from which his descendants received the nickname "von Neuforn".

Against the will of the Schaffhausen council, he entered the French service and served as councilor and chamberlain under the kings Heinrich II. , Franz II. And Karl IX. Francis II raised him to the French nobility in 1559 .
