history

It was founded in 1755 as the state bank of the Zurich city-state. The future mayor Johann Jacob Leu played a key role in the founding . The Austrian Empress Maria Theresia was one of the customers . In 1798, the bank saved itself from the confiscation of its deposits and assets by the advancing French troops with a rapid privatization . In 1915 the company moved into its headquarters at Bahnhofstrasse 32 in Zurich, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in the city. Between 1963 and 1979, new branches opened all over the canton , thus developing into a universal bank . In 1990 Bank Leu was bought by what was then CS Holding (today: Credit Suisse Group). From 1997 to 1998 Bank Leu was completely realigned and restructured. At the beginning of 2007 it was merged with Clariden Bank , Bank Hofmann , BGP Banca di Gestione Patrimoniale and the securities dealer Credit Suisse Fides to form Clariden Leu , which was merged with Credit Suisse and dissolved in 2012.

In its 251st and final financial year, Bank Leu employed 541 people and had total assets of 16.524 billion Swiss francs and customer assets totaling 34 billion Swiss francs.
