Surge men
After the sinking of the island of Rungholt near Groote Mandränke in January 1362, many of the fishermen and farmers who had become homeless got together to earn a living together.
The so-called billy men , who spread fear and terror, did this through raids and raids on small farms and by boarding small merchant ships in order to repeat what Naked Hans had previously taken from them. To do this, they settled in the village of Westerhever and built a fortress , the Wogemannsburg , in a difficult-to-reach place .
After betrayal in 1370, the Wogemen were defeated by the stable Owe Hering and the residents of the area. Sixty wogemen were beheaded, the castle destroyed and their stones used to strengthen the church of St. Stephen and to build the tower.
