The Schaffhausen State Archive is the archive of the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen and its predecessors. It secures the historical tradition of the canton and the former city-state, preserves them and makes them publicly accessible. As an office of the cantonal administration, the State Archives are subordinate to the State Chancellery .

history

Until the middle of the 17th century, the documents and files that emerged from the official business of the council were kept in chests in the town hall. When the space in the town hall was no longer sufficient, an archive room was built over the former treasure vault in 1669 under the direction of the city architect Heinrich Peyer.

The archive room and the documents stored in it were originally administered by the town clerk. In 1732, Franziskus von Meyenburg, the first professional archivist, was appointed. In the same year, the archive was expanded to include the neighboring house.

In 1831 the archives of the city-state of Schaffhausen became the Schaffhausen Canton Archives. In 1885 the archive was renamed "Staatsarchiv". In the same year, a fundamental renovation took place under the direction of the cantonal master builder Johann Christian Bahnmaier. From 1886 the documents of the former All Saints monastery were also housed in the newly acquired rooms .

The archive room, which was set up in 1669, was also known for a long time as the "onyx room", as the onyx from Schaffhausen was kept here. In 1923 the room was converted into a publicly accessible reading room.

In 1936 the archive building was increased by another floor. Nevertheless, not all archive holdings can be housed in the main building at Rathausbogen 4 today. The State Archives manage three external magazines, including one in a former Georg Fischer AG plant .

Stocks

The State Archives keep records of the cantonal offices and dependent institutions of the canton. It also takes over the files of the cantonal courts. The administrative delivery is supplemented by documents from associations, parties and companies operating in the cantons.

The historic core of the tradition is the archive of the former city-state Schaffhausen to 1830. Of great importance are also the stocks of the Reformation repealed monasteries All Saints and St. Agnes in Schaffhausen, the convent Paradies in Schlatt and St. Georgen in Stein am Rhein. In addition there are the holdings of the state offices that were created when these monasteries were closed to administer the former monastery property. The State Archives keep the archives of the historical guilds and today's guild associations.

For genealogists, it is particularly important to inspect the church records . With the exception of the parish registers of Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein, which are kept in the Schaffhausen City Archives or the Stein am Rhein City Archives, and the parish registers of the Rüdlingen and Buch communities, the State Archives have been making the parish registers of all communities in the canton available digitally since 2016.

The entire archive material covers approx. 4000 linear meters. The oldest of the approx. 6000 documents dates from the year 987.

Archive library

The State Archives maintain an archive library with around 43,000 titles. The main focus of the reference library is on research literature on regional history. The books and journals in the State Archives can be researched in the online catalog of the Schaffhausen Libraries .
