International Association for Public Transport

The International Association for Public Transport (French: Union Internationale des Transports Publics ( UITP )) is the worldwide association for public (local) transport ( ÖPNV ) based in Brussels . The association was officially founded on August 17, 1885 .

The member organizations come from 96 countries. There are 1400 different institutions and companies of various legal forms, ownership structures (private, public etc.) and origins.

Both national associations, for example the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) or the Swiss Association of Public Transport (VÖV) , as well as individual transport companies , the supplier industry, public bodies and transport researchers are organized in the UITP .

In May 2017, Pere Calvet Tordera was elected UITP President. His main job is the managing director of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) in Spain.

Mohamed Mezghani has been UITP General Secretary since January 2018.

UITP's activities include a. regular forums, working groups and publications. There is cooperation with the United Nations ( UNEP , UNDESA , UNFCCC ), the World Bank or institutions of the European Union . In some cases, we also join forces with other top organizations such as the Union of the European Railway Industry (UNIFE) or the International Union of Railways (UIC) .

The long-standing director of the Cologne transport company , Wolfgang Meyer , was President of UITP from 2001 to 2005 and was made Honorary President at the end of his term of office.
