Wolfgang Meyer (born October 22, 1938 in Siegburg ) is a German civil engineer and was a high-ranking official in the field of local public transport .

Life

Wolfgang Meyer first attended the municipal high school in Gummersbach and later the Humboldt high school in Solingen , where he graduated from high school in 1958. He then studied civil engineering with a focus on traffic at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen (funded by the German National Academic Foundation) and graduated in 1965 with a degree in engineering. In 1973 he did his doctorate with Hermann Nebelung at the Transport Science Institute of RWTH Aachen University. with the dissertation Generation models of local freight traffic on roads .

Act

Wolfgang Meyer's professional career initially had a scientific, then a planning-technical and finally an entrepreneurial background. After working as a scientific assistant at the Transport Science Institute of RWTH Aachen University, during which he also worked as a research assistant for the " Advisory Council for Environmental Issues ", he initially worked in the "General Transport Plan" working group in the Ministry of Economics, Medium-Sized Enterprises and Transport in North Rhine-Westphalia -Westfalen in Düsseldorf with responsibility for rail traffic. He then moved to the newly founded Stadtbahngesellschaft Rhein-Sieg (SRS) in Cologne as an authorized signatory , and in 1977 he became the technical director of the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG (KVB). He held this position for 26 years until 2003.

In addition, he was also a board member and managing director of various other Cologne transport and consulting companies. From 1978 to 1992 he was board member and railway operations manager (EBL) of Köln-Bonner Eisenbahnen AG (KBE), from 1986 to 1992 managing director of Häfen Köln GmbH (HKG) and from 1992 to 1997 board member and railway operations manager of Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG ( HGK). From 1985 to 2003 he was also managing director of Rail Consult Gesellschaft für Verkehrsberatung mbH and from 1997 to 2003 also managing director of Stadtbahngesellschaft Rhein-Sieg mbH, which he knew well from his earlier work.

At the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg GmbH (VRS), Meyer was chairman of the supervisory board from 1993 to 1995 and, since 1995, when it was reorganized from a group of companies to a local authority group, he was chairman of the company advisory board until 2003.

In addition, from 1992 to 1998 he was chairman and from 1998 to 2003 a member of the supervisory board of DKS service company for communication systems of the city and regional transport company, Cologne, and from 1997 to 2011 a member of the administrative board of STUVAtec study company for underground traffic systems, Cologne.

For many years Meyer was also active in various prominent functions in various associations in the transport industry. From 1991 to 1997 he was chairman of the administrative board for goods traffic and vice-chairman of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), from 1986 to 2001 chairman of the VDV planning committee and from 1993 to 2001 a member of the international light rail committee of the International Association for Public Transport (UITP). In 2000 he was first elected Vice-President and on May 21, 2001 at the World Congress in London he was elected President of UITP, which has its headquarters in Brussels and has around 3000 members from over 80 countries worldwide. In this function, Meyer was confirmed in office for a further two years at the 2003 World Congress in Madrid.

After retiring from the KVB executive board at the end of 2003, Meyer continued his professional work as a consultant on various major public transport projects. So he was u. a. active from 2003 to 2005 for the Peruvian capital Lima in the planning of its urban rail network, from 2004 to 2006 for the transport minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as a member of the planning advisory board for the creation of a regional rail transport concept for the development of the Kirchberg plateau and the airport, 2007 for the City of Augsburg and Stadtwerke Augsburg as a member of a team of experts to develop proposed measures for urban transport planning and in 2009 for the Department of Transport of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the planning of its future rail transport system (metro, light rail, tram). He also gave guest lectures at the University of César Vallejo (UCV) in Trujillo / Peru (2003 and 2005) and at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA (2005 and 2006). Since 2013 he has been working for the city government of Moscow as a member of the International Transport Expert Council to solve the problems of the rapidly growing traffic in the Russian capital.

Meyer is married, has two grown children and lives in Cologne.

Meyer has been a member of the Club of Rome since 2005.
