Rhein-Sieg light rail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The light rail networks of Cologne and Bonn are combined as the Rhein-Sieg Stadtbahn . They are connected to each other in the two overland routes Rheinuferbahn and Vorgebirgsbahn , most of which run through the Rhein-Sieg district and the Rhein-Erft district . The Bonn light rail network is operated by SWB Bus und Bahn , the Cologne system by the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB). On the overland lines, vehicles of the SWB bus and train run in Cologne and vehicles of the KVB in Bonn.

The municipalities in the traffic area from Cologne to the Rhein-Sieg district founded the Rhein-Sieg urban railway company in 1974 to promote cooperation and joint planning and construction of a light rail network. The operation was continued by the participating KVB / HGK and SWB. After the commissioning of the Rheinufer- and Vorgebirgsbahn, the Stadtbahngesellschaft was mainly responsible for planning work and the settlement of grants for the further expansion of the two railway lines and as a developer for the planning and construction of park and ride / bike and ride facilities.

The light rail company was dissolved by resolution of the shareholders' meeting in December 2007 with effect from January 1, 2008 and has been in liquidation since then . The reason for the dissolution was a sharp decline in investments in local public transport , which were subsidized under the Municipal Transport Financing Act , which had led to the company's economic deterioration.
