The Dortmund Stadtbahn is a light rail system belonging to the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Dortmund and is operated by the Dortmund municipal utility (DSW21). The network with eight lines is 75 kilometers long, 20.5 kilometers of which are in the tunnel. Of the 125 stations, 98 are on the surface and 27 are underground.

The light rail went into operation with a 4.1 kilometer long express tram section between Kirchderne and Grevel and was operated from May 15, 1976 initially with tram line 2 (later 402/406, today U42). Long before there was talk of a light rail, the line from the short-term terminus at Markgrafenstraße (corner of Ruhrallee, opened on November 1, 1957) via Westfalenpark to Hacheney was put into operation on April 30, 1959 as an intersection-free express tram. Also long before the introduction of the Stadtbahn, the first Dortmund underground station, Westfalenhalle (at that time without the plural n), went into operation as an originally rather spartan tram stop. All three measures were still part of the planning for an expansion of the tram, which was essentially based on the axes of the main roads that were often only created in the post-war period. The routes should be conducted usually in downtown above ground on its own track body in middle of the road, only a few nodes as Unterpflasterbahn with simple construction standard, so with height equal branches. The first long tunnel section went into operation in the Hörde district on May 27, 1983 and was used by tram lines 401 and 406 until the official opening of the tram on June 2, 1984. Then the U41 light rail line started operating there.

The light rail was originally operated with 600 V direct current. However, since both the B-cars and the NGT8 are designed for a voltage of 750 V, the voltage was gradually increased to 750 V. In December 1999 the changeover took place on main line I, in June 2002 on main line II. Since the N8Cs used at the time were not designed for 750 V, the voltage on main line III could only be adjusted in 2012.

Overview

The light rail network is made up of three trunk lines that intersect as a triangle in the city center and partly branch off to the suburbs. The three crossing stations are Kampstrasse , Reinoldikirche and Stadtgarten . The operations control center is also located within the Stadtgarten station.

The east-west line was completed as the newest light rail line. It is also referred to as trunk route III . The lines U43 and U44 were officially released for operation on April 27, 2008. They replace the previous tram lines 403 and 404. The new NGT8 light rail vehicles also run on this route. The last trip of an N8C with passengers took place on December 21, 2011 on the small U43 between Westentor and Brackel.

The network is divided into two sub-networks. The branches of the trunk lines I (Leopoldstrasse – Markgrafenstrasse) and II (Brunnenstrasse – Stadtgarten) are high-floor urban railway lines. In contrast, main route III is used with medium-floor light rail vehicles. It is therefore more similar to a subway tram , but is run in the route network as a light rail (see description with U + 4 as the area code for Dortmund + another number).

Explanations of the line tables:

  • Partial course of the line
    • in brackets: temporarily no operation on the section concerned
    • in bold type: the section in question runs in the tunnel and has only underground stations
  • Transfer options: If next to the stop name
    • Deutsche Bahn AG-Logo.svg stands for regional traffic
    • Train stands, to the S-Bahn
    • Light rail stands, to (crossing) light rail lines

Clock: The clock is shown Monday to Saturday during the day, approximately between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. In the evening traffic from around 8 p.m. to around midnight and on Sundays all day, all lines run every 15 minutes (U45 and U49 every 30 minutes from around 10 p.m.). From the start of operations between 3:00 and 4:30 a.m. until around 5:00 a.m., the service usually runs every 20 minutes.

At the stops Dortmund Stadthaus , Dortmund Möllerbrücke , Dortmund-Westerfilde, Dortmund-Marten Süd, Dortmund-Wickede and Dortmund Hauptbahnhof you can change to the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr . The Hörde stop is within walking distance of Dortmund-Hörde train station and offers transfer options to the regional transport network.

The Dortmund network is so far the most closely meshed within the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn. As the route network plans of the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn show, the  original network expansion, largely financed with state funds, has so far been largely implemented - unlike in other cities such as Duisburg .

After the commissioning of the B100S light rail vehicles in 2005, which were purchased by Stadtwerke Bonn in 2003 and previously used on the Bonn light rail , there were initially numerous delays due to the unreliable used vehicles. The reason for this was mostly regular door malfunctions, including mostly failures of the light barriers and contact problems. Between 2007 and 2010, the fault-prone compressed air doors were replaced by new electric doors from Fahrzeugtechnik Dessau (which are also used in the modernized B100S of the Essen city railway ). The cars are expected to be withdrawn from 2020.

In December 2013, the DSW21 announced that all high-floor wagons should be modernized by 2025. The conversion of the light rail vehicles is to begin in 2021 at the earliest, and 20 to 26 new high-floor trams are to be ordered, the ex-Bonn B100S will be decommissioned. In June 2015, an order for the delivery of 24, as well as two further optional, new high-floor light rail cars was put out to tender. This was awarded in April 2018 to the company HeiterBlick , which is to deliver the 24 new vehicles (B80D " Vamos Typ Dortmund ") from 2020 onwards. In addition, the complete modernization of all old high-floor wagons should be completed by 2028 at the latest.

Timetable

The trains generally run every 10 minutes (Brambauer: 20 minutes), on Sundays and from the early evening every 15 minutes (Brambauer: 30 minutes). The U43 line between Westentor and Brackel is compressed to a 5-minute cycle; all other light rail lines only run on special occasions such as B. Borussia Dortmund football games every 5 minutes. At major events, the service does not end between midnight and 1 a.m., as usual, but is extended every 30 minutes until 3 a.m.

At the main station (parking area Leopoldstraße) the incoming trains of the U45 change to the line U49 and vice versa. Mondays to Fridays during rush hour (3pm to 6pm) this happens partly at the harbor and at the Fredenbaum.

Former lines

The tram lines at that time can be traced on historical city maps from 1962 and 1972.

The table below lists the former timetables of Dortmund's trams and light rail systems since 1965.

Light rail in planning

Tunnel tube on the east-west route between Reinoldikirche and Ostentor during the construction phase

After the operational concept of the Dortmund urban railway, which was drawn up in 1982 and updated in 1991, was almost completely implemented with the completion of the east-west route, the Dortmund City Council passed a resolution on February 14, 2008 on a urban railway development concept that specifies the priorities for future expansion and which emerged from an examination of 24 proposed measures.

Priority 1 (so-called basket 1 ) comprises all measures under construction or preparation:

  • on the east-west route including the route to Westfalenhütte (lines U43 / 44)
    • Completion of the tunnel sections (in April 2008)
    • Adaptation of the above-ground sections of the east-west route to the medium-floor light rail vehicles (until 2010)
    • Expansion of the section in Asseln to two tracks (carried out in 2009)
    • Upgrading the traction power supply
  • on the high-floor light rail lines
    • Elevator retrofitting in the underground stations Leopoldstraße (2011), Münsterstraße, Märkische Straße and Rombergpark
    • Barrier-free expansion of the Kirchderne, Flughafenstrasse and Droote stops (line U42 - completed)
    • Reconstruction and expansion of the Hauptbahnhof underground station (widening of the side platforms , new access - under construction since autumn 2014, completion expected at the end of 2019)
    • Double-track expansion between the bus station and the branch in Huckarde including barrier-free expansion of the Abzweig stop (line U47)
  • in the course of the conversion of federal highway 1 to federal freeway 40 (line U47 towards Aplerbeck)
    • Level-free underpassing of the tram heading east to Marsbruchstrasse (in regular service since November 14, 2016, remaining work not yet completed)
    • Conversion of the stops at Kohlgartenstraße, Max-Eyth-Straße, Stadtkrone Ost and Vosskuhle / Lübkestraße

Priority 2 (basket 2) includes measures in the existing network as well as route extensions with a positive benefit-cost ratio and favorable follow-up costs:

  • Urban-integrated, barrier-free expansion of Rheinische Strasse in the course of the western route (lines U43 / 44, following the Heinrichstrasse tunnel ramp)
  • Barrier-free expansion of the east-west route and the route to the Westfalenhütte

Priority 3 (basket 3) comprises strategic measures for which a route is to be secured:

  • Extension of the U49 line from Hacheney to Wellinghofen / Godekinstraße
  • Relocation of the route between Borsigplatz and Rampe Weißenburger Straße (line U44) to Weißenburger Straße
  • Level-free expansion of the railway / light rail crossing in Obernette (line U47)
  • Branch of the U47 line from the Huckarde branch to Kirchlinde school center (benefit-cost factor 1.2 - but annual follow-up costs of over 3 million euros)

With the urban railway development concept, the following proposed measures were rejected:

  • further extension of the Phoenix-West development (see above) to Berghofen
  • Extension of the U42 line from Grevel to Lanstrop (benefit-cost factor 1.13 - but currently not compatible with the Grevel village development plan in terms of urban planning )
  • Extension of the U47 line in Aplerbeck
  • Branch of the U43 line to Wickede Dollersweg
  • Branch from the U43 line at the Am Zehnthof stop with a guided tour along the route of the former Dortmund railway via the Lübkestraße stop to Neu-Schüren Markscheiderstraße (referred to as the U48 line)
  • Branch from the U43 line to Wittener Straße and guided tour to Planetfeldstraße or the Technologiepark (connection with S1 line)
  • Extension of the U46 line from Westfalenhallen to Löttringhausen parallel to the regional railway line to Hagen
  • Connection curve from the north head of the Reinoldikirche underground station (below) to the north head of the Hauptbahnhof underground station to relocate the northern end of the U46 line from Brunnenstrasse to the main station
  • Branch of the U47 line from the main cemetery via the airport to Holzwickede train station (route securing for a possible future option)
  • Development of the Phoenix-West development area by U45 or U46
  • Extension of the U44 line to the Westfalenhütte area
  • Extension of the U41 line from Clarenberg to Overgünne (benefit-cost factor 1.3 - requires further qualification)

Measures according to the urban railway development concept

In December 2012, the Dortmund Civil Engineering Office announced which future construction work will be carried out for the Dortmund urban railway. As with the urban railway development concept in 2008, this was divided into three priority baskets.

Priority 1 (so-called basket 1 ) comprises all measures under construction or preparation:

  • on the east-west route including the route to Westfalenhütte (lines U43 / 44)
    • Upgrading the traction power supply
  • on the high-floor light rail lines
    • Elevator retrofitting in the Münsterstrasse, Märkische Strasse and Rombergpark underground stations
    • Level-free underpassing of the tram heading east to Marsbruchstrasse (completed and opened on November 14, 2016)
    • Reconstruction of the stops at Kohlgartenstraße, Max-Eyth-Straße, Stadtkrone Ost and Vosskuhle / Lübkestraße, with dismantling of Westfalendamm

  • Extension of the U41 line from Clarenberg to Overgünne
  • Extension of the U49 line from Hacheney to Wellinghofen

Priority 3 (basket 3) comprises strategic measures for which a route is to be secured:

  • Relocation of the route between Borsigplatz and Rampe Weißenburger Straße (line U44) to Weißenburger Straße
  • Extension of the U44 line to the Westfalenhütte area
  • Branch of the U47 line from the Huckarde junction to Kirchlinde school center
  • Development of the Phoenix West development area
  • Connection to Dortmund airport
  • Crossing measure of the DB freight line in Obernette on the U47 line

Planning two-system light rail

After a two-system light rail system based on the Karlsruhe model was introduced in Karlsruhe in the early 1990s, considerations also arose in Dortmund for several regional light rail lines based on this principle. A line should run on the Volmetalbahn route and better develop the inner cities in the cities of Dortmund, Hagen and Lüdenscheid by using light rail lines. The plans for such a line were discarded due to the costs, despite the high traffic benefit. There are also plans to connect the city of Bergkamen , which is not served by local rail transport today. As part of a technical preliminary investigation, various variants were examined for this line, including an extension of the U42 on its own light rail tracks to Bergkamen or a guided tour of the Deutsche Bahn route to Dortmund Central Station. There are a total of five routing variants within Bergkamen. From Bergkamen, a continuation of this line to Hamm is planned. Due to the costs of more than 120 million euros, the plans have been on hold for several years.
