location
The train station is located where the street Freistuhl, where the Sparkasse high-rise and the RWE Tower are located, meets the eponymous Kampstraße, on which tram lines 403 and 404 operated until the completion of the east-west tunnel in April 2008 . The Petrikirche , Westenhellweg and the city and state library can also be reached from Kampstrasse .

The underground station was built using the cut-and-cover method. As a preliminary work, the platform level of the later east-west line has already been built.
Immediately below the surface is the distribution level, which, in addition to the usual infrastructure such as ticket machines, also houses a few shops. The customer center of the DSW21 and the VRR , which was located here, was relocated in October 2013 and is now located at the Petrikirche. On the next level, the lines in north-south direction (trunk route I) are served by two side platforms . Each of these has space for up to three type B light rail vehicles . The main route III crosses the north-south axis below. Two N or Bombardier Flexity Classic trams can be served from a central platform in each direction of travel . All platforms and the distribution level can be reached from the surface using elevators and escalators.

Originally, Kampstrasse station was served by the U41, U45, U47 and U49 light rail lines in a north-south direction and offered an aboveground transfer option to the 403 and 404 trams on the east-west axis. Since the completion of the tunnel between Unionstrasse and Ostentor, with which the tram lines were replaced by the U43 and U44 light rail lines, also run underground. The underground station thus connects six of Dortmund's eight light rail lines.
