The Westphalia Park Dortmund became the first of the three local national garden shows opened (1959, 1969, 1991). On the site of the old Kaiser-Wilhelm-Grove, the Buschmühlenpark , a garbage dump and overgrown allotment gardens, a park was created, the center of which was the tallest German building at the time, the Florian Tower , at 220 meters .

With 70 hectares , the park is one of the largest inner-city parks in Europe and serves as a popular excursion and recreation destination in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is home to the German Rosarium , which presents more than 3,000 different types of roses to its visitors and is the location of many concerts and regular events, such as the Juicy Beats Festival or the Festival of Lights . The final rally of the traditional May Day demonstration of the DGB will also take place there. The concerts on the floating stage as well as the a cappella festival and the flea markets are particularly popular. Many events take place under the awning in the middle of the park. The 1980s parties and the Ibiza parties were crowd pullers, which attracted well over 1,000 visitors.

The Westfalenpark was expanded by 10 hectares for the Euroflor Federal Horticultural Show in 1969. The rosarium and, in its center, the water heart, a basin, the water level of which changes periodically, were built on the site.

The sun sail designed in 1969 by the architect Günter Behnisch is considered an experimental building of a self-supporting roof structure. After the feasibility of such a ceiling construction had been demonstrated here, the Munich Olympic Stadium was built .

The nature reserve house can also be found in the park. At the time of the Federal Horticultural Show in 1991, 2.5% of the total area of the park was made available for nature conservation. This area is "an island of voluntary nature conservation" in the middle of a park. The AGARD (AG amphibian and reptile protection in Dortmund) looks after this nature conservation island on behalf of the committed nature conservationists who work free of charge. School classes, kindergartens and other groups of all ages (from 5 years) have the opportunity to explore nature in and around the nature reserve.

The Westfalenpark is located on the northern slope of the Emscher and the terrain follows the natural geography with a gentle gradient. The river itself forms the southern boundary of the park.

On the southern part of the park area was the Am Busch colliery , established in 1768. The first Dortmund steam engine had been in operation there since February 21, 1816 . It pumped pit water from a depth of around 25 meters and thus made civil engineering possible on hard coal . During the underground laying of the sewer as part of the project to convert the Emscher system in the early 1990s, part of the old tunnels and crosscuts were cut and documented with photographs. This documentation is made available to the public as an exhibition on the reconstructed Göpelschacht Christine in the Westfalenpark.

In 2007, work began on a large-scale redesign of the parking areas, which have now been completed. Westfalenpark participates in the research project Sustainable City Parks under the working title Florian's Garden . 2019 was thanks to a donation Bauckloh Foundation ten bat boxes , two Owl boxes , three Kleiberhöhlen , three tree creeper caves , ten niche breeder caves , five sleeper Kobel for dormice , ten insect hotels, 15 Hedgehog domes and twelve old apple varieties and 27 local bird protection shrubs purchased.

The German Cookbook Museum , a nostalgic puppet theater and the Ballet Center Westphalia (previously: RWE Solar Energy Forum) are still located in the Westfalenpark Dortmund .

Several playgrounds, including a large adventure playground for children, a boules pitch , open-air chess, a park railway , a chair lift, Kneipp facilities , boat and handcart rental and the large arcade round off the leisure activities of the Westfalenpark for young and old. In summer 2006, a small soccer field with artificial turf and 100 grandstand seats was opened.

The chairlift of the Westfalenpark is a two-seater chairlift that went into operation in 1959, overcomes a height difference of 23 meters and can transport 720 people per hour.

The Festival of Lights has been held in summer since 1959 and offers the tens of thousands of visitors fireworks and entertainment. Since 2006, the Westfalenpark has been illuminated every year from the end of November to the beginning of January as part of the winter lights campaign.
