The Deutsche Rosarium GRF is a rosarium in Dortmund's Westfalenpark .

History of the rosarium

The rose collection is based on a cooperation between the Gesellschaft Deutscher Rosenfreunde e. V. (GRF) and the city of Dortmund. On May 19, 1969, an agreement was signed to found a rosarium in the Westfalenpark. The German Rosarium GFR was officially opened on July 14, 1972. The heart of the rosarium is the rose garden in the 120-year-old Kaiserhain of the Westfalenpark.

tasks

The task of the rosarium is to present, increase and disseminate knowledge about the rose in all its diversity. Rose species and varieties from all over the world are collected and exchanged in the rosarium. With 2,600 different varieties and species, the rose city ​​of Dortmund is home to one of the most extensive rose collections in the world. The rose plantings are presented thematically in connection with the most varied of perennials and trees. The variety of roses, their origins, breeding and horticultural use are presented in themed gardens. Experts from the German Rosarium participate in national and international rose competitions and in the General German Rose Novelty Examination (ADR) . The Rosarium is the venue for national and international rose congresses.

Facilities and events

The rose gardens are grouped along the rose path with 38 stations. In addition to historical rose gardens, including the Medieval Garden , the Art Nouveau and Bürgergarten , a scented and wild rose garden , climbing roses and ramblers are presented on a 65 meter wide and 6 meter high climbing rose wall. The origins of modern rose cultivation - the old roses , the native wild roses , Alba roses , Gallica roses , Damascus roses , moss roses or Bourbon roses - are shown in separate gardens. Well-known rose growers of shrub , noble and climbing roses such as Tantau , Kordes , Lambert , Noack as well as cultivars from the former GDR have their own gardens. In ADR rose garden excellent rose varieties are presented, while in Rosensichtungsgarten selected new varieties are planted. A selection of rose varieties from other countries are shown in the nations theme gardens . The garden is completed by numerous sculptures by well-known sculptors .

An extensive program of events, with regular themed tours throughout the "Rose" year, the annual rose festival in June , information events and workshops make the Rosarium a destination for experts, laypeople and rose lovers.

The Rose Library of the rose garden is one of 1800 textbooks of the largest collections in the world on this issue.
