Peter Lambert (born June 1, 1859 in Trier , † February 28, 1939 in Trier) was a German rose breeder .

Life

As the son of a gardener family, he spent his apprenticeship in the tree and rose school "Lambert & Reiter". After attending the higher gardening school in Potsdam-Wildpark in Germany, he spent his assistant years in France and England to get to know different methods of rose culture. He left Potsdam as a certified royal head gardener to take over rose growing in his father's business in Trier.

In 1889 “Lambert & Reiter” presented its first breeds. The creamy white new breed presented in 1890 was named 'Kaiserin Auguste Victoria' in honor of the German Empress and was internationally recognized.

In 1891 Peter Lambert founded his own tree nursery in Trier, where he and his brother Nikolaus (1861–1941) temporarily cultivated around 60 hectares. There he grew roses such as 'Eugenie Lamesch' (1899), 'Leonie Lamesch' and the more frequent blooming 'Trier' (1904). This was the first shrub rose to bloom frequently and founded a group of roses that are often incorrectly referred to as moschata hybrids, but are also known as Lambertiana roses.

In 1899 he married Leonie Lamesch, daughter of the well-known rose breeder Jean-Baptiste Lamesch, who lived in the Luxembourg "rose" district of Limpertsberg . For the wedding, Lambert named a violet-pink polyantha rose after his bride.

Peter Lambert suggested the establishment of the Rosarium Sangerhausen . He was a member of the Rose Prize Courts in Saint Petersburg , Paris , Haarlem , London , Lyon and Florence and co-founder of the Association of German Rose Friends (VDR) - today the Society of German Rose Friends e. V. (GRF). From 1891 he was also managing director of the Rosen-Zeitung .

In Nells Park Trier was created in honor of Peter Lambert, a rose garden. Peter-Lambert-Straße in Trier has been named after him since 1938.
