The name Rosa polyantha was given in 1843 by the German botanists Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini for a multi-flowered rose from East Asia. However, it turned out that the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg had already described the same rose as Rosa multiflora in 1784 .

Polyantha roses , from the Greek polyanthes : many-flowered; are the result of multiple crossings of this rose. The first polyanthas were the 'Ma Paquerette' introduced by Guillot in 1875 and the 'Mignonette' introduced 5 years later.

Polyantha roses are characterized by their umbel-like inflorescences or large clusters of flowers and their very bushy growth. They are generally scentless, although there are some good scented varieties here too (e.g. 'Natalie Nypels').

Polyantha roses include the so-called Compacta roses , which were developed by the Dutch rose breeder Gerrit de Ruiter . They grow extremely stocky, are only 30–40 cm high, have rigid shoots and were named in Germany with the name of the “seven dwarfs” (e.g. 'Alberich').

The polyantha hybrids that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century are cultivated roses that have developed from them and with their somewhat larger, mostly half-double flowers, develop a strong color effect. They are often planted in groups to increase their effectiveness at a distance. There are single-flowered and double varieties.

The crossing of hybrid tea and other (wild) rose species resulted in a large number of intermediate forms, which are now combined with the floribunda roses to form the group of bed roses .
