List of rose varieties |
Floribunda , formerly called Polyantha hybrids are a Rose class of cultivated roses and hybrids of large-flowered Polyantha roses with hybrid teas .
Its development is primarily linked to the Danish rose breeder Svend Poulsen, who set out to create new roses that could withstand the cold Scandinavian winters and produce a maximum of flowers in short summers. Its first introduction was 'Rödhätte' ('Little Red Riding Hood') in 1911, followed by 'Else Poulsen' in 1924 and 'Kirsten Poulsen' in 1925. However, at that time these varieties were still called polyantha hybrids.
The number of annual new breeds has become obvious; Therefore, today there are so many intermediate forms of polyanthine, polyanthic, tea hybrids and floribunda roses that these roses have now been combined into the group of bed roses named after their use .
features
- permanently blooming
- often very many flowers that are reminiscent of hybrid tea roses, especially when it comes to Floribunda Grandiflora roses (a class of roses created in the USA that could not establish itself in Europe). With some varieties such as ' Montana ' so many flowers are clustered that the rose cannot be recognized as a rose from a distance and one believes that it is a matter of flower umbels instead of an abundance of individual rose flowers.
- With increasing age of the plant, flowers do not, as is so often the case, become lighter, but darker.
- mostly good cut roses; therefore they are also known as ostrich roses.
origin
The name "Floribunda roses" originally comes from Dr. JN Nicolas, USA and has been used in America since 1930 for crosses between hybrid tea and polyanthine ; while in Germany a distinction was made between these classes. Seen in this way, the first floribunda rose was born in Germany as early as 1908: It is the variety ' Gruß an Aachen ' by Philipp Geduldig , which the English rose breeder David Austin says was the first English rose .
properties
The floribunda roses are generally characterized by a very strong, bushy growth, they are low to medium high, and in some cases even higher. The flowers are in large or medium-sized, mostly flat stands, the individual flowers are cup-shaped to flat, often filled like tea roses, medium to large. Most of them lack the scent, but there are also fragrant varieties.
The yellow floribunda races usually have a slightly weaker growth than the other varieties, and their leaves are usually lighter green. All flower colors are represented, from white to the deepest black-red, from sulfur yellow to dark yellow, orange and copper-brown, as well as lilac-colored flowers to violet-purple, and also many two-tone varieties, such as yellow / red, pink / red, red / white, purple / brown and other shades.
