The Am Busch colliery is a former hard coal mine in Dortmund .
The mine field of the colliery was on the site of today's Westfalenpark north of the Emscher . The first coal is said to have been found in this area as early as the 14th century, and coal graves have existed since the 15th century.
The mine was set up in 1768 by Baron Andreas von Hövel. In the northern slope of the Emscher Valley, a tunnel was first dug in the direction of the coal-bearing seams . Light holes were set up to ventilate the tunnels . The pit water was diverted towards the Emscher.
In 1811 work on shafts 2 and 3 began. The depth of the Christine shaft took place in 1812. The shaft initially had a depth of 29 meters and was later expanded to 40 meters. The Am Busch colliery was one of the first civil engineering mines in which the marl layer, however, only a few meters deep, was overcome. In 1815 the consolidation to the Friedrich Wilhelm colliery followed with further small collieries . In 1816 another shaft was sunk and equipped with a steam engine for dewatering .
