Civil engineering
Civil engineering is the branch of civil engineering that deals with the planning and construction of buildings is concerned that at or below the earth's surface are. The term "civil engineering" serves in particular to distinguish it from the field of building construction .
Overlaps with civil engineering arise, for example, in the construction of bridges , which as part of traffic routes are sometimes counted as civil engineering although they are above the surface of the earth.
Civil engineering comprises large parts of the structural infrastructure . This includes the construction of roads , bridges, railways, galleries and tunnels, earthworks , waterworks , mining and foundations as well as the construction of supply and disposal networks such as waterways , dams and sewer systems .
Civil engineering planners are essentially civil engineers . Architects are only called in for special design tasks. General contractor may be specialized companies that are active only in civil engineering or companies that both trades also perform in portrait or in civil engineering.

Legal situation in Germany
According to the current 'Demarcation Guide' which the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the German Chamber of Handicrafts have jointly developed, civil engineering is not considered a craft. However, if the component road construction is included, an entry must be made in the craft register.
Legal situation in Austria
In Austria civil engineering is an apprenticeship with a three-year training period. The apprenticeship training provides knowledge of the properties, uses and processing options and processing guidelines of building materials as well as the operation, cleaning and maintenance of tools, devices and construction machinery.
