The Sparkasse Dortmund was founded on January 14th, 1841 with the task of enabling all citizens of the city to save and to grant them cheap loans. As early as 1863, as a result of advancing industrialization, it had grown into a savings bank with the largest deposit portfolio in the Arnsberg administrative region , and in 1906 it was the fourth largest Rhenish-Westphalian savings bank. In 1924 , an Art Déco building built by Hugo Steinbach was used as the main administration. The building now houses the Museum of Art and Cultural History .

In 1958, Sparkasse Dortmund, which had been part of the municipal administration until then, became legally independent. The institute received its first own IT system in 1968.

particularities

The “Dortmunder Münzkabinett”, an exhibition on Dortmund's coin history with some examples of Dortmund's inflation money, is sponsored by Sparkasse Dortmund. In 2019 the collection was given to the Museum of Art and Cultural History Dortmund on permanent loan.
