Clarenberg is a location in Dortmund in the south of the Hörde district . The eponymous Clarenberg refers to the Clarenberg monastery and the Clarenberg colliery . In the statistical sub-district of Clarenberg, a total of 3,156 inhabitants lived on 0.68 km² on December 31, 2018.

description

A large housing estate was built on the grounds of the Neuer Clarenberg colony from 1969 to 1973 . A total of 25 four- to 17-storey buildings with a total of 1069 apartments were built on an area of around eight hectares . Today around 3,200 people live here near the Hörde district center, about five kilometers southeast of Dortmund city center. The Clarenberg was built mainly by VEBA Wohnstätten AG (934 apartments). The Hörder housing cooperative gws owns 60 apartments, the rest is privately owned.

After the abolition of non-profit housing, the VEBA housing associations withdrew from social housing and from low-income districts. The Hörder Ruhr-Lippe housing company , which is 50 percent owned by the state-owned LEG Wohnen NRW and the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Westfalen , acquired the VEBA apartments in 1992. The Ruhr-Lippe housing company was sold in 2008 together with the other LEG NRW holding companies to a group of fund companies under the umbrella of the American company Whitehall. Two years later it was incorporated into the private LEG NRW. Critics of the sale of state housing associations fear that large housing estates in particular - such as the Clarenberg - will suffer from insufficient investment.

Rework 1998-2005

Almost 30 years after it was built, the estate showed considerable structural defects in the areas of living and the surrounding area. There were also social problems and a. due to a high number of children and young people receiving social assistance. For these reasons, the plan to renovate the settlement arose in the mid-1990s. In 1996 and 1997 council resolutions were passed to include the settlement in the state program “Social City of North Rhine-Westphalia”. Work started in 1998. The buildings were provided with thermal insulation and a new color concept.

Some of the house numbers are up to eight meters high, artistically designed and placed in front of the buildings. Great emphasis was placed on improving the environment. Open spaces and playgrounds have been redesigned. The houses and the underground car parks were provided with video surveillance, and a caretaker for the residents can be reached during the day in the entrance area of house No. 11. In addition, additional contact points have been created for the residents. A neighborhood meeting point was set up, as well as youth welfare measures and various measures to integrate the residents into their settlement. There were joint planting campaigns in the green areas and a Christmas party for the volunteers. A second-hand shop was also opened. These facilities are looked after by the AWO , Diakonie and dobeq in Dortmund.

Since 2006, the Clarenberg settlement no longer belongs to the program area of the “Social City of North Rhine-Westphalia” and therefore no longer receives any funding.
