The Dortmund district of Großholthausen is part of the Hombruch district . With 232 inhabitants, Großholthausen, which is still rural today, is one of the smallest suburbs in Dortmund.

Neighboring towns are Hombruch in the north, Löttringhausen in the east, Schnee in the south and Kruckel in the west .

The place is divided between the old village lying in the lowlands of the Grotenbach with several courtyards and scattered buildings on the rise of the Ardey Mountains , where the railway stop of the disused Löttringhausen-Witten railway line was. Since the Middle Ages, Großholthausen has been part of the Kirchhörde parish with a Schultenhof, which presided over a court association and was owned by the Brandenburg rulers. With the incorporation of the rural community of Kirchhörde, Großholthausen fell to Dortmund in 1929.
