Location of Bodelschwingh in Dortmund

Bodelschwingh is the statistical district 91 and at the same time a district in the north-west of the city of Dortmund . It belongs to the Mengede district .

geography

Bodelschwingh is about 8 kilometers northwest of Dortmund city center. Geographically, with the exception of the southern transition to Westerfilde, the Bodelschwingher residential development is clearly demarcated from its neighboring districts. To the west of the settlement area runs the federal motorway 45 , which here is part of the Dortmund motorway ring.

The southern and central areas of the place are predominantly characterized by single-family houses and smaller apartment buildings. In the center there is still a large number of half-timbered houses. This is particularly noticeable in Richterstrasse as well as around the Protestant church and on Deininghauser Strasse . The northern area of the village has mostly multi-family houses.

history

What is now Dortmund's Bodelschwingh district was first mentioned in a document in 1311. Settlement in pre-Christian times is considered likely, but is not certain.

Towards the end of the 13th century, the von Speke lords laid the foundation stone for the Bodelschwingh moated castle, which was first documented in 1302 . Westhusen Castle , located in the neighboring district of Westerfilde , was also owned by the family, who later called themselves von Bodelschwingh . Even Friedrich von Bodelschwingh the Elder , the founder of of Bodelschwingh Institutions Bethel , comes this noble family.

The industrial age began in Bodelschwingh with the sinking of the Westhausen colliery between Westerfilde and Bodelschwingh . As a result of immigration, the formerly purely agricultural place began to grow to its present size.

The buildings of the Westhausen colliery that are still preserved today are among the most architecturally significant in the entire Ruhr area and are an important part of the route of industrial culture .

The traditional fair has been held in the center of Bodelschwingh since 1322. The origin of the event goes back to a parish fair. This is the “Maria zu Ehren” church donated by Gisbert Specke, Lord of Bodelschwingh Castle. At the same time as the Kirchweih festival at that time, the lord of the castle organized a fair, where jugglers entertained citizens with their jokes. It is thus one of the oldest fair events in Dortmund. Since then, the fair has taken place once a year on a weekend in June or July from Saturday to Monday, with "Fair Monday" always falling on the first Monday in July. The three-day event is traditionally opened by tapping the keg and ending with fireworks . In addition, the last day of the event is traditionally opened with a Krammarkt.

On April 1, 1928 Bodelschwingh was incorporated into Dortmund.
