Ellinghausen borders on the districts Schwieringhausen , Holthausen , Lindenhorst , Deusen , Nette and Groppenbruch .

Ellinghausen

Ellinghausen was one of the smallest settlements in the former county of Dortmund . Nevertheless, the history of the farmers on the Emscher goes back to the Franconian times in the 8th century.

Most of Ellinghausen was used in the past century by the former coal mines Zeche Minister Stein and Zeche Fürst Hardenberg as coal and spoil dumps. Around 90 people live in Ellinghausen, who up until around 20 years ago were mainly involved in agriculture . In the meantime there are no longer any farmers in Ellinghausen. But there are still a few farms, some of whose history goes back to the 12th century.

On April 1, 1928, Ellinghausen was incorporated into Dortmund. At the end of the Second World War , Ellinghausen was exposed to severe air raids, as an anti-aircraft ( flak ) base had been set up here to protect Dortmund's city center from Allied air raids.

Due to its many fields and dirt roads, Ellinghausen is popular with cyclists and walkers. Part of the Emscher-Weg and Dortmund-Ems-Kanal-Route leads through Ellinghausen. The Westphalia Triathlon , which is held around the Fredenbaumpark , is also run through the district.

The Ikea goods distribution center on the Ellinghausen dump

In 2003, the multinational furniture company Ikea opened a 72,000 m³ distribution warehouse on a former waste dump owned by Hoesch AG , in which 250 new jobs were created. The expansion to a European distribution center has now been completed. Today 1,300 people work in the Ellinghausen goods distribution center. Around 1000 of these people work directly at Ikea and another 300 are employed by service providers commissioned by Ikea at the location. A further expansion of the goods distribution center with a siding on the Dortmund-Ems Canal is planned.

The wind energy plant called Ellwira, which went into operation in April 2005 and has three times 2 MW output, is today a landmark visible from afar in the otherwise more agricultural area in the north of Dortmund.

One of the two Emscher flood retention basins in the city district is located in Ellinghausen.

Technical data of the flood retention basin:

  • Average depth 5–6 m through excavation
  • Slope slope 1: 4
  • HW annualities 100 years + smaller ones
  • Area Mengede 33 ha, Ellinghausen 30 ha
  • Storage volume 1.1 million m² 1.0 million m
