history

Benninghofen owes its name to an old aristocratic residence that was first mentioned in a document in 1268. As was customary in the Middle Ages, the aristocratic seat included lands and the cottages of the farmers who were subject to feudal duties . When the town of Hörde was founded in 1340, the knight Heinrich von Benninghofen lived on the aristocratic estate. In the 15th century Haus Benninghofen was taken over by the Lords of Holtey, an old knight family from Eichlinghofen . Goswin von Holtey was Drost of the Hörde office around 1380 . The Holteys died out around 1580. Then Gut Benninghofen had different masters. Between 1813 and 1822 after the end of serfdom by the French administration , the nobility sold the entire property to the farmers, kötter and new settlers in the area in order to forestall expropriation . In Benninghofen there were now free farmers living with their own land.

Benninghofen developed from this free farming community. Later simple craftsmen and finally the industrial proletariat moved to the neighboring Hermannshütte . The aristocratic residence was demolished in the middle of the 19th century, only the former gatehouse remained until 1960. Then this last relic of Benninghof's history had to give way to the construction of a settlement.
