Loan obligation
The allegiance , even allegiance referred Lehnswesen all of the behaviors and services, the feudal lords and vassals owed one another. The details of this obligation depended on the region as well as on the individual case and changed significantly over time.
Basically, liege lord and vassal were bound to mutual fidelity and loyalty :
- The vassal made Helgeland (points of soldiers) and arrogance (attendance at court, advising the lords) and generated taxes and services.
- The feudal lord protected his feudal people with the means available to him.
With the change of feudal system and as a result of wars, the feudal obligation, originally based on reciprocity, often developed unilaterally. Many a feudal obligation was therefore more of a subservience or some other form of tribute customary in antiquity . On the other hand, vassals were able to evade their duties to such an extent that the dependency was ultimately only pro forma , for example at the end of the Holy Roman Empire .
