In Eving and Lindenhorst, the change to an industrial society began in 1870 with the depth of the first shafts on the coal mine, Zeche Minister Stein and Zeche Fürst Hardenberg . The mines were the main line of business in the city district until they were closed in 1987. The workforce in the mines was up to five thousand at peak times.

The former premises of the Minister Stein colliery now form the basis of the Neue Mitte Eving, the landmark of which is the refurbished hammer head tower of the mine.

Due to the influx of miners and displaced persons after the Second World War , up to 41,000 people lived in the district.
