Career

Lars Ricken started playing football at the age of six at TuS Eving-Lindenhorst , with whom he was three times in a row special class champion. He came to Borussia Dortmund in 1990 via TSC Eintracht Dortmund . In 1992 he became European champion with the German U16 team in Cyprus .

Under Ottmar Hitzfeld, he moved up to the team of licensed players at the age of 17. Until November 26, 2005, when midfielder Nuri Şahin , who also played for BVB, scored his first Bundesliga goal, Ricken was the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Bundesliga. Parallel to his professional career at Borussia Dortmund, he also graduated from grammar school with a grade of 2.4, did his military service and then studied business administration at the University of Hagen .

Ricken scored several important goals early in his career. On December 6, 1994, he scored the decisive 3-1 goal in the 118th minute of the second leg of the 1994/95 UEFA Cup against Deportivo La Coruña . In the 1996/97 Champions League season , he scored the 1-0 winner in the second leg of the quarter-finals and semi-finals against AJ Auxerre and Manchester United . In the final on May 28, 1997 in Munich's Olympic Stadium against Juventus Turin , around ten seconds after his substitution in the 71st minute, he overcame Turin goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi, who was far in front of the goal, with an arc lamp from 25 meters to make the decisive 3: 1. The goal was goal of the year in 1997 and was voted “BVB goal of the century” by the club's fans on December 19, 2009 on the occasion of Borussia Dortmund's 100th anniversary.

In the following years, however, Ricken was unable to build on his early successes. He was also unable to assert himself in the national team. In the first half of the 2004/05 season he was even temporarily sorted out at BVB, but he became a regular again in the second half. On November 14, 2005, Ricken tore a cruciate ligament and was out for the rest of the season.

In March 2007 he was transferred to the second team by then coach Thomas Doll , in which he took over the role of captain . Ricken was finally eliminated from the squad on July 5, 2007. His professional contract was finally terminated on December 31 of the same year. In February 2009 he ended his football career.

After the career

After finishing his active career, Lars Ricken strove for a position in club management. From January to July 2008 he was an employee of the BVB office, where he completed a trainee program leading through all areas of administration , which should be completed on June 30, 2009. The program was ended prematurely when Ricken was appointed as the successor to Edwin Boekamp as BVB's youth coordinator in July 2008.

From July 2009 to June 2011 Ricken was an expert on the Pay TV transmitter Sky operates. There he analyzed Bundesliga and UEFA Europa League matches .

Ricken with his then wife Andrea Kaiser at the German Television Award 2012

A TV commercial produced in 1997 with the sports equipment supplier Nike caused a sensation, and in some cases aroused opposition in the football world. The reason for this was Ricken's criticism of the promotion of young talent and the business conduct of many football clubs that was expressed in the spot. Quote: “I see clubs that buy expensive professionals without promoting the next generation. I see guys in pinstripes, I see endless profiteering. "

In April 2011, Ricken completed a DFB coaching course with other former Bundesliga professionals at the Oberhaching sports school to acquire an A and B license.

Ricken was married to the TV presenter Andrea Kaiser since July 2010 . In August 2013, the previous separation was announced. In May 2016 he married his new girlfriend and in the same month he became the father of a daughter.
