Alex Alves (real name Alexandro Alves do Nascimento ; born December 30, 1974 in Campo Formoso , † November 14, 2012 in Jaú ) was a Brazilian football player .

Life

Alex Alves began his career in 1993 with EC Vitória from Bahia in northeastern Brazil. From 1994 to 1995 he played for Palmeiras São Paulo and in 1996 for EC Juventude and Portuguesa . He then moved to the Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte .

He came to Hertha BSC in 1999 for a transfer fee of around 15.2 million marks , but never really got a foothold there. With a 52 meter long shot from the center circle, Alves scored the goal of the year for Hertha BSC in 2000 . Despite some successful games, he made the headlines mainly because of his repeated escapades. The police repeatedly stopped him while driving without a valid driver's license. After his overall mixed Bundesliga time (81 games, 25 goals), Hertha separated from him in May 2003, although Alves still had a valid contract until the end of the 2004 season. The association even agreed to continue paying part of the agreed salary. After leaving Berlin, the striker went to Atlético Mineiro , where he was sacked at the end of 2003 for indiscipline. He later described this move back to Brazil as "... the worst decision for my career". His next club was CR Vasco da Gama . There he was also released after seven months of work. In 2005 he played again for the EC Vitória. In January 2007 he moved to Boavista SC from Saquarema in the state of Rio de Janeiro . From June 2007 on, Alves stayed in Germany again, where he kept fit with the second division Alemannia Aachen . In February 2008 he went to Fortaleza EC in the Brazilian state of Ceará . It didn't last long there, however. Alves decided in March 2008 to move back to Europe, this time to the Greek second division club AO Kavala .

After he was diagnosed with alleged leukemia in 2008 , he ended his career after the 2008/09 season. In 2010 he celebrated a return to União Rondonópolis in the Campeonato Mato-Grossense de Futebol, where he had to end his career due to his illness. Alves initially did not have the financial means for a stem cell transplant and underwent chemotherapy without success . A bone marrow transplant only took place in October 2012, the donor was one of his brothers. On November 14, 2012, Alves died at the age of 37 from complications of the rare bone marrow disease paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria . The initial suspicion of leukemia was not confirmed. He left behind a daughter from a divorced marriage.
